Storm Day

A picture book by Morwen Tresidder  COMING

The big one comes in daylight: storm-cones up, boats double-moored, Kit and Tegen "helping" (mostly carrying biscuits). The lifeboat launches into it — and everyone ends packed in the bakery, candles lit, wind howling, Martha telling stories.

  • Thrilling storm, safely held
  • Gentle lifeboat bravery
  • Biscuit-carrying humour

In Storm Day, Polperran wakes to weather with its shoulders set: flags changed to storm-cones, shutters fastened, boats double-moored against the daylight blow. Kit and Tegen are determined to help, though their most useful work may be carrying biscuits from hand to hand. When Davy's pager sounds and the lifeboat heads into the weather, Morwen Tresidder keeps the story cosy in the teeth of it, with the sea treated with proper respect.

Young listeners will love the satisfyingly busy preparations: the clack of shutters, the seriousness of mooring ropes, and Kit and Tegen’s biscuit-carrying brand of helpfulness. The danger is real but held at a picture-book distance, with brave grown-ups, familiar faces and a warm place waiting. The read-aloud rhythm moves from bustle to hush, giving four- to seven-year-olds a thrilling storm story that still feels safe in small hands.

As part of Polperran Tales, Storm Day gives younger readers one of the village’s defining experiences: everyone knowing what to do when the weather turns. The picture-book series introduces the people and places children will meet again as they grow through Little Chough Press’s age-banded Polperran books — the harbour, the lifeboat, the bakery, Martha’s stories, and the quiet understanding that Cornish coastal life is full of kindness, work and watchfulness.
